From Hamilton to Auckland

We left according to plan soon after ten with our little Daihatsu crammed with camping equipment.
The scenery is green and tranquil with farm animals dotted around copiously.

The weather still hasn't settled, and before long rain deluged down.

As we experienced last time we were here, roadworks seem to be the norm including stop start areas.

We arrived in Auckland in the pouring rain. Fortunately just in front of us we saw a parking lot so we pulled in and then rushed through the rain to sign in to the Backpackers we had booked. We asked them where we could park and they said parking was very expensive in the city. We went back to the car to fetch our stuff and found two parking monitors and established that to park our car for the rest of the day would cost seventy five dollars (R750) and overnight would be thirty five. that means that for three days it would cost us in excess of three thousand rand.

The parking attendants were very helpful, suggesting another parkade nearby where we might only pay thirty five dollars a day. One of them, an Indian called Blesson, even offered to help us carry our luggage. We did have to pay eight dollars, however to park for thirty minutes while we off-loaded.

We remembered we were carrying a gift for friends so we wondered if we could possibly park in their property and catch a buss back. We phoned both the husband and wife and left messages, then decided to go to their house anyway while they responded. We saw that it was totally impossible to park in their property. A long narrow driveway served three houses and already cars were parked one behind the other. We could possibly have parked in the street near their house but when we worked out the probable bus fare, we decided rather to go back to the cheaper parking lot and just bite the bullet and pay the un-budgeted expense.

With all this to-ing and fro-ing, it was after eight when we finally got back, ate a jam sandwich each for supper form the supplies we purchased on the way home, and collapsed into bed.
