Opoutere and Papamoa

I bought two vouchers on Grabone (New Zealand equivalent to Groupon) for 9.99$ each for Opoutere Beach.   It was quiet, out of the way and very restful.   Certainly not the same standard as the Top10 park at hot water beach but perfectly adequate.   We had a long walk along the beach which was almost deserted.

We saw birds, shells, flowers and a very interesting rock island.   In the fantasy it would have been the island of Trolls.

There was also a jutting out piece of land that looked most similar to what in my imagination is a grassy knoll, also the neighbourhood of fairies and goblins.

Someone had made a chair out of driftwood.

We met a very interesting family from Germany.   We chatted to Sven Feddern.   He has taken 9 months parental leave (unpaid) to take his wife and kids (5 and 2 and a half) on a cycle trip around New Zealand.   They imported the bicycles and carts from Germany and they stop at different places, put up their tents and spend a couple of nights before moving on.   The children were very well behaved and the parents did all the good parent stuff –reading bed time stories, explaining  things to the children.

Today we made our way to Papamoa Beach where we are staying at a Christian camp.   We heard from the hosts that there was a tornado in Aukland that killed three and injured about 11 people.

Luckily they have a weather station on site becuse there has been a strong wind warning for this area.

The weather today has been all sorts, sunny, rainy, windy, hot, cold.   The roads started off the usual steep and windy but levelled off and straightened out a bit as we got closer.   However driving still requires a lot of concentration.DSC03113

It was very misty when we went to visit the beach.   It looks moody.

Tomorrow is our longest journey yet – off to Napier – about 300km.
