I totally forgot. I was woken with a “Happy Anniversary!” and a beautiful card and a book of God’s promises for women. Sorry, Ladies, I let the side down. I had nothing to offer when my wonderful husband did the Romantic thing.
As it was a Sunday, we had identified a church in Monueke and were welcomed from the time that we parked the motorhome outside it. It was a Uniting church, Presbyterian and Methodist with a small contingent of Tongan Christians.
The church itself has been declared to be earthquake sensitive so it has been fenced off and nobody is allowed to go into it and the congregation are meeting in the hall until they decide what to do – under God’s guidance..
The service was old school Methodist type with a couple of variations, including a section for Tongan readings and hymn which we didn’t understand at all, of course. We had communion which was good.
We were made to feel very welcome and met some nice (older) people, including Jack Churchill (73 years of age), a relative/descendant of Winston. After some shopping we were on the road again. We made a scenic detour via Ruby Bay.
We weren’t sure whether we would stop at Murchison or go on to Westport, but Brian’s arms were up to the longer drive to Westport. It was a good drive with lovely scenic views especially along the Buller River.
Soon after Murchison we came across New Zealand’s longest swing bridge at 110m and decided to go over it and on a short walk to see fault lines from the 1929 Murchison Earthquake.
We arrived in Westport just in time to check in and then we smartened ourselves up and I took us to dinner at a Grill house. Yummy Rump steak and salad and chips. We reminisced about our 34 happy years and the many great memories we have.
That was a very happy anniversary and one we will remember for a long time.
